‘Heidestrand’ is the place to be for the real nature lovers. Here you are in the very heart of the ‘Wijers', a real hotspot for many rare animals, where the bittern, tree frog and little bittern, among others, have found their home. From the look-out tower, you have breath-taking views over the hundreds of ponds. In addition, this is the centre of fish farming. There are still some family farms active. You can stay at the campsite or come for a swim for the day.

What is there to do?

Water fun

Heidestrand campsite offers plenty of water fun for children and adults alike: a bright blue open-air swimming pool with slide and springboards and a swimming pond invite you for a splash. There is also a sunbathing lawn, playground, petanque fields, sports field, table tennis and a fishing pond.

Hiking

From the car park of Heidestrand campsite, there are several hiking trails that invite you to discover the beautiful pond area. Several viewing huts are dotted along the route, allowing you to spy on the numerous water birds. The watchtower offers you a unique panorama of the water. ‘De Teut’ and ‘Ten Haagdoorn’
In the late summer, nature reserves ‘De Teut’ and ‘Ten Haagdoorn’ are at their best. That’s when the heather colours the landscape in a beautiful purple hue. Crystal clear pools and special panoramas turn this into a unique experience. The prehistoric ‘holsteen’ grinder, with its 5,000-year-old grinding marks, gives this area a mysterious touch.

De Holsteen
The ‘Holsteen’ site features the only fixed stone grinder in Flanders. Prehistoric man already used the stone for flattening out tools. In the town hall, you will find many archaeological objects on display in the permanent exhibition on prehistoric life in this municipality.
